Kuch Bhogal
CBH: From what I know about your work, you've spoken about visibility being quite important. So I felt it'd be really interesting to have a conversation. I'm trying to find those kind of meeting points - so there's a mixture of wanting to understand more about your practice, and see what emerges as discussion points with the things I'm thinking about within my project in terms of the process.
Were there any questions or things that came to mind when you read through the project document? What were your connection points with it?
KB: I guess one thing I was thinking about was, I couldn't imagine a position where performativity or performing visibility is not a part of someone's practice. I'm sure there are some people, but yeah, I think it's quite a big aspect of what I'm thinking about whenever I'm doing something - who’s gonna see the work. So, I've got some specific lenses on who I'm thinking about when I'm thinking about the who, and also thinking about the why - what the impact will be of that potential visibility.
This month I've started my home residency. So I've got a month - and I’ve been thinking about it for a few months, so I'm on my own in the house for three months. I thought I'd use the opportunity to get technically better at painting but also to go deeper into one of my big preoccupations in my work, which is about desire. It's really about my experience of, well, it's my attempt to articulate visually what desire feels like to me. It's very much from my relationship to what I see in other bodies. And part of… so I was writing about it last night because I was thinking about what I'm doing, and I was wondering why I keep coming back to this kind of thing in my practice.
